Projection-mapped animations and iPad app
Transport for Cape Town, the city's transport authority, was hosting a stand at a large public transport conference in Italy and needed an impactful way of delivering their content. We were approached to solve this using projection-mapped material controlled by iPads.

The client and I worked together to produce a script that told the story of public transport and its challenges in Cape Town. A storyboard was then drawn up, which was to be the basis of the experience. The script went into the recording studio for recording. Once the script was finalised, a storyboard was developed supporting the narrative. Since the animation was to be projection-mapped, we needed to consider this when designing the storyboard.
I created a library of illustrations and animations to visualise the narration. Additional visuals were needed, such as photos and video footage. I had access to their media archive, which contained thousands of photographs and videos. I selected relevant files for the project and in spite of the vast amount of media, there was still a shortfall of images to make the story complete. I briefed a photographer for additional photos and videos.
The library of illustrations was also used in the printed material to create a consistent visual language.
Several months later, TCT needed the project adapted to a slightly different format for a public transport congress which was being held in Cape Town. Since the content was created and developed in a modular way, it was easy to adapt the existing style to the new script and experience.

The challenge was converting the highly complex information and statistics from the data engineers into a compelling story that kept users interested.
I worked closely with the client and by focusing on the key factors and messages that she wanted to get across, we worked and reworked the script until it painted a clear picture of the issues facing public transport in Cape Town. Once the script was done, the illustrations and media were crafted to support the story.

There was a high level of engagement from users with the information which sparked meaningful conversations with the TCT staff.

When I began to design the visual identity of the exhibition, my starting point was to draw inspiration from the rocks. Their physical makeup is faceted which offered a certain pleasing design aesthetic plus there is a multitude of colourful stones embedded within them.
The content was very text-heavy so I knew I needed to design a neat grid structure for the various templates. The templates needed to be scalable and to work across all the banner wall sizes. The treatment for the banner wall titles was also important as they needed to indicate the section and rock type and act as visual markers. Defining templates upfront helped to define a word count for each of the banners, which then helped the content editor shorten the text to fit the templates.
For UATP, the stand set up included two stations consisting of 2 widescreens controlled by iPads and headphones. I extracted the relevant areas of content; new scripts were created with additional voice-over recordings done for the new animations. New designs and animations were developed for this experience.

Once the script was approved, the storyboard was created, which was the basis for all the creative work. The plan for the block was already specified so we already began to plan what content would appear on which area of the 3-dimensional screen or blocks. Here is a portion of the storyboard.
