BACKGROUND AND BRIEF:

In 2009, Pixel Project created an interactive table for Liliesleaf Trust. The table was installed in the dining room of the original farmhouse of what used to be Liliesleaf Farm. Liliesleaf is an award-winning heritage site that was used by anti-apartheid activists for secret meetings in the 1950s and 1960s. These meetings and activities came to an end after the infamous Rivonia Raid in 1963, during which key political leaders were arrested.

In 2017, we were commissioned to refresh the software with an updated design and to add new content. The hardware was also upgraded which gave us the opportunity to assess and improve the experience based on the growth and installations in the rest of the museum. New content was made available and the entire project got an update.

APPROACH:

Liliesleaf gets a lot of big school groups, and this was an essential factor in planning the software update. There were four areas of content, and I decided that each of the four quadrants of the table, would be dedicated to a particular part. By splitting the content into smaller sections, visitors would be encouraged to move around the table and explore the different areas of information, thereby creating flow through the room.

CHALLENGES:

One of the most significant updates and improvements to the table was the installation of a large optical touch-frame. The touch frame now offered the benefit of turning the entire table into a touch surface. The disadvantage of this was, if visitors leaned on the table, this would trigger a touch event. Eventually, users would understand how to navigate and adapt their behaviour to the touch surface.

Another challenge was the resolution of the projector; the pixel density on projections are not as crisp as LCD screens.  The content was presented as large as possible, maximising visual space and the use of contrast between text and backgrounds was designed.

The next challenge was how to deal with the case if more than one person played video. The solution played one audio track at a time. So, while many videos can play at the same time, the video triggered first played audio, while the others would be muted.

RESULT:

Our client was overjoyed with this new upgrade. Distributing the content around the table, meant fewer bottlenecks and more movement around the room.

The images below show how the content was divided into 4 areas and oriented to face users on that side of the table. The progression of these screens show a step-by-step process of each section being accessed.
