Touchscreen - Photobooth
The ANZ Olympic Photobooth travelled around New Zealand in the weeks leading up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
During the actual games, NZHQ Fan Zone was set up at the Cloud at the Queen’s Wharf in Auckland. Inside the Cloud, various brands had stands, competitions and installations for visitors to enjoy, it was a festive hub for Olympic Fans. ANZ was a major Olympic sponsor for the New Zealand Athletes.
Satellite were briefed to create a photobooth where visitors could pose for a selfie with their favourite NZ Olympic athletes and show support for the national team.
To grab the attention of the fans, a screensaver was created with videos of the athletes pointing out and beckoning for people to come closer, along with some copy - it was a fun way to get the attention of the visitors and create intrigue.
The athletes and person posing for a selfie needed to be the heroes of the experience. So the interface needed to be clear, simple and accessible for various heights and ages.
The sport, clip and name of the person was all available to the user when they were choosing who to pose with. There was also a preview of their choices with the athlete”popping” in from the side of the screen.
Clear instructions needed to be displayed at each stage to make sure the fan got a fantastic shot with the athletes. When the fan was ready, the athletes would move into frame for their perfect NZ Olympic Team shot!
Two large, portrait-mounted screens were installed in the gallery which was an unusual but exciting format that allowed for a fresh approach to interface design. Auckland’s naturally long and narrow shape made a portrait layout a perfect fit for the interactive map, which served as the main navigation tool.
The videos were bold and visually compelling, so the interface needed to be clean and simple, letting the films take centre stage. I designed a high-contrast, graphic map with interactive points, giving visitors an intuitive way to explore different stories.
To add movement and draw visitors in, the screensaver featured short video clips of each person in a moment of stillness, overlaid with a quote from their interview. This created a dynamic effect that offered a glimpse into their personalities, stories and communities.

Fans flocked to the photobooth to pose with their favourite National Olympic athletes to show their support. Their selfie was accessible from a text message which took them through to a microsite where they could download or social share their selfie.
