BACKGROUND AND BRIEF:

Freedom Park stands as a monument to democracy in Africa and the exhibition space explores the history of mankind right back to its origins in Africa. Pixel Project was awarded the tender for the software brief to design and develop software for the touchscreens in the museum. The touchscreens were to be an interactive touchpoint for visitors to gain further insight into African history. In addition to this, they would also serve as an aid for the storytellers who guide visitors around the museum.

APPROACH:

I directed the creative team that designed the visual identity and software for the touchscreens. There were 8 epochs in the museum and each had a specific theme and colour palette, the interface was designed to match the theme and colour within each epoch. Textures were strategically included in the UI, reflecting the surrounding artefacts and panels. Subtle animations were also used on the screens to attract visitors to the screens.

Visitors could learn more about the rich African history through the articles, interactive games and photo galleries on the touchscreens.

All the content was handled by a custom-developed a Content Management System (CMS) built by Pixel Project specifically for the museum.

CHALLENGES:

The biggest hurdle we faced at the start of the project, was that there was no content nor content strategy.  The first 6 months were spent simultaneously designing the look and feel of the software, as well as developing and producing content for the touch screens. During this time, I worked closely with a specially selected team of writers and researchers to strategise and formulate templates for the various sections in the software, while the main writer supplied numerous topics and ideas for articles.

Curators can add to the information on the touch screens via the CMS that was developed.

RESULT:

The curators are able to contribute and add to the growing archive of information on the kiosks via the CMS that we developed. The client was very satisfied that we captured the ambience of the museum in the design of the software.

INTERACTIVE ACTIVITIES FOR YOUNGER VISITORS

I also designed some mini-games for the younger visitors to Freedom Park.
These educational games were a great way to encourage the youngsters to be curious about the bigger exhibits in the museum.
